Ball games are fun activities that get your kids out of the house and running around. Below are four fun ball games that you can play with your kids this weekend. They also make great activities for birthday parties.
1. Down Down
Participants form into a circle and begin throwing the ball randomly to one another. This is to ensure all participants can’t anticipate who the ball will be thrown to. If the participants don’t catch the ball when it is thrown to them, they must kneel down on one knee. The game continues with each participant who misses playing in this position. The second time the participants don’t catch the ball, they must kneel down on both knees. The third time the participants don’t catch the ball; they must put one hand behind their back and continue to play. The fourth time the participants don’t catch the ball, they are out of the game. If the participants catch the ball in any position they can move up into the previous position. The last participant remaining wins the game.
2. Cats in the Corner
Mark out a square playing field with markers. Nominate one participant to be the thrower and position them in the centre of the square. Get the remaining participants to stand in a corner of their choice. Each corner is considered a safe area. When the thrower is ready they must yell ‘Cats in the Corner’ and all of the participants standing in the corners must run to another corner without getting hit by the ball. They can run in any direction. If a participant is hit before they have made it to the safe area, they are out. The last participant remaining is the winner.
3. Say and Catch
Position all participants into a circle. All participants must decide and agree on a category e.g. colours, animals, cartoon characters etc. The ball is given to one participant (using the colours category as an example) they say a colour and then throw the ball to another participant in the circle. The participant who is receiving the ball must say another colour before they catch the ball. If the participant receiving the ball doesn’t say a colour before they catch the ball, they are eliminated from the game. The last participant remaining wins the game.
4. Kick the Can
Nominate a participant to be the guard. A ball is placed in the middle of the backyard and the guard must stay near the ball to protect it. The other participants must try to run up to the ball and kick it without getting tagged by the guard. If a participant is tagged they are out of this round. If a participant succeeds and kicks the ball without getting tagged by the guard, they win and take the place as the new guard for the next round. If the guard manages to tag every participant that attempts to kick the ball, they remain the guard for the next round.
