With so much to do when it comes to planning for a new baby in the family, it can be easy to overlook an important purchase, or conversely end up with unnecessary items due to over-enthusiastic shopping! We thought we would make it easier to stay on track in the run-up to the birth by providing an easy-to-use newborn baby checklist. This simple list incorporates everything necessary for baby's first few months. Use it to ensure that when baby arrives, you've got everything you need on hand. download checklist now > COTS Available in a wide range of styles and materials, cots can be used for baby to sleep in from birth. Make sure that any cot you purchase complies with AS/NZS 2172:2003 safety standards. Cots are traditionally made of wood and feature slatted sides to allow adequate ventilation and for baby to be able to see out. COT MATTRESS Important for a good nights sleep, cot mattresses must meet a strict set of safety standards. Make sure you choose a cot mattress that fits your cot well! MATTRESS PROTECTOR To fight the inevitable spills and stains, make sure you invest in a simple mattress protector. This should make cleaning up much easier! BEDDING A wide range of baby-friendly bedding is available across Australia, however make you sure you read all current safety advice regarding bedding for infants. NEW PAINT/ WALLPAPER Turning an old bedroom or study into a nursery is always a challenge. There's nothing like a lick of fresh paint and some new wallpaper to transform a room into a very special nursery indeed. ONESIES You can never have too many onesies! Baby will need several changes most days; an adequate supply of onesies is an absolute wardrobe essential for any newborn. BODYSUITS WITH SLEEVES Always a favourite, these garments can be used over a onesie to provide versatile baby outfits. Make sure you have a range of fabrics here, for example merino bodysuits for winter and cotton versions for the warmer summer months. SLEEVELESS BODYSUITS Particularly during the warmer months, or if baby tends to push and pull at a sleeved garment, a sleeveless bodysuit or two can be the perfect addition to their wardrobe. SOCKS Little feet are vulnerable to the cold, so a pair of socks can make all the difference. You can also get socks with grips on the bottom to help aid their movement when they start crawling! PANTS Baby pants not only look adorable, they also allow children to develop their walking more easily. Whether you opt for a simple pair of leggings or warmer pants, these items are highly recommended for trips outside in the colder months. CARDIGANS An investment in case there's a cold snap, cardies are also a great way to add a finishing touch to any outfit. If you are lucky enough to have a relative who knows how to knit, a handmade cardigan is one of the best gifts you can receive for your newborn. BEANIES Babies can feel the cold, so a beanie when they're out and about can be an excellent idea. Remember to remove beanies as soon as baby is indoors in the warm, in order to reduce the risk of overheating. SUNHAT A sunhat is a must for any baby growing up in Australia, as the sun can be particularly harsh on newborns. Be prepared with a sunhat, and keep it in your baby bag! SHOES/BOOTIES Although the experts recommend that babies remain without shoes on their feet for as long as possible, there are always occasions when a pair of shoes are necessary. To make life easier, there are some gorgeous first shoes on offer - frequently made of soft leather, these gently enfold the foot without crushing or pinching. MITTENS There are two types of mittens which are commonly available: in addition to the popular mitten that's used to keep fingers toasty during the cooler months, scratch mitts are also available. Scratch mitts make it harder for unwanted itching to occur. Scratch mitts are used if baby has eczema or some other itchy complaint and won't allow the affected area to heal without scratching. But don't spend too much, as your baby will grow out of them before you can blink! JACKET Keeping a jacket handy can be a good idea for when bubs gets out and about. Blankets keep them warm in most situations, but its best to be prepared with a cosy jacket if possible! Make sure you choose a jacket that's easy to get on and off. BIBS It is sometimes hard to believe just how much mess a small baby can generate during a feed! From plentiful dribble and regurgitated milk in the early days through to pureed food during the later months, a baby bib protects clothes from the worst of the spills and stains. Make sure you have plenty of bibs, as you will need every one of them. HIGHCHAIR As your baby moves onto solid foods, a good highchair is essential for mealtimes. Look for highchairs with good reviews from other parents, and make sure the highchair is suitable for your dining area. Choosing your material is important, as there are wooden and plastic highchairs to consider. A good highchair will need to last you several years, so ensure you get one that is adjustable as your little one turns into a toddler! FEEDING BOWLS/ SPOONS Because it can be hard to predict when your baby will be ready for solids, having a supply of feeding bowls and spoons handy is a good idea. BREAST PUMP A convenient option for expressing breast milk when your baby needs nutrition and you're not available to do it. BOTTLES Designed specifically to provide a safe and suitable way for babies to drink milk, they can be used to hold breast or formula milk. Bottles are usually made from plastic and are offered with a selection of different teats. This ensures that baby is able to use a teat which is a good fit and comfortable for them. If required, bottle sterilisers are also available. FEEDING SUPPORT PILLOW It doesn't matter whether you're breastfeeding or bottlefeeding, it can get uncomfortable quite quickly. A support pillow can help give your arms a break and make feeding time a little more comfy for both parent and child, especially if your baby is a slow feeder. TEETHING AIDS Intended to bring comfort to babies and younger children, medical opinion is conflicted regarding how useful teething aids can be. If you have a child who is restless and doesn't sleep during the night, a teething aid could be the answer, however always seek professional advice first. NAPPIES Parents may choose to opt for easy-to-use disposable nappies or washable cloth (non-disposable) options, or use a combination of both types. Cloth nappies are available in a selection of different styles and sizes and are often felt to be a greener choice than disposables. An important consideration to keep in mind is that many newborns require around 10-12 nappy changes a day. WIPES Absolutely invaluable to keep baby clean and fresh during nappy changes or as a quick clean up alternative when out and about. Be sure to dispose of wipes in changing bins, or look for those which are proven to be biodegradable or flushable so as to help prevent environmental pollution. NAPPY RASH CREAM Even with regular changes and good hygiene, nappy rash can still be a painful problem. Using nappy rash cream at the first sign of nappy rash symptoms can help to ensure baby stays comfortable.. BABY BATH Ideal for safe bathing, a baby bath has the right dimensions for your baby to get clean while at the same time allowing you to easily hold them in order to ensure they stay safe. These can be used within an empty standard size bath, or simply on the floor (but have some towels handy!). FACE CLOTHES Just the thing for gentle washing and rinsing after a fun day of playing. You can never have too many baby cloths around your home, so stock up on these ones too as you will go through them quickly. TOWELS Soft, fluffy towels that are kind to baby's delicate skin are an essential item on any new baby checklist. You can also get hooded towels to keep your newborns head warm if desired. BUCKET WITH LID Things get messy with a newborn. To help deal with all sorts of situations, make sure you have a bucket with a lid on hand! This can store dirty clothes, nappies and linen until they get a chance to be washed - without stinking out your whole home. The lid also helps to keep the contents safe from baby as they get more mobile. BABY WASH Although not essential in the early days (babies can get perfectly clean enough from water alone), a gentle, delicate baby wash can add a touch of luxury to the bath time routine. Some body washes can be found which contain relaxing chamomile or lavender. These can help to promote sleep in some children, providing a soothing fragrance. BATH TOYS As your little one becomes more comfortable in the bath, you may wish to add in the fun of bath toys. You also don't need fancy toys, a simple plastic cup from the kitchen can provide hours of fun! BABY HAIRBRUSH For those infants who have been blessed with a lot of hair, a baby hairbrush can help to tame the locks after bathtime, or before a big event. NAPPY BIN Perfect for putting reusable nappies in, nappy bins typically have a tight-fitting lid to ensure hygiene and prevent any odours escaping. PRAM It goes without saying that a pram is needed in order to get the new arrival from A to B. Learning to balance before peddling is one of the most important elements of learning how to ride a balance bike which is why balance bikes are becoming a popular choice over training wheels. The most important factor to consider when purchasing a balance bike is to ensure that your child can put both of their feet flat on the ground. Below are some tips to encourage your child to learn how to ride their balance bike. Start by walking If your child is hesitant to hop on their balance bike, start by encouraging them to walk the bike by holding both handles. This will get them use to the concept of holding the bike handles in their hands and steering it. Teach your child about weight and balance Most children don't understand the concept of how a bike works, and that it requires weight and movement to propel them forward. Your child might understand the concept of sitting on a chair, but don't forget that a bike is a foreign object to them, and one that they must learn to trust. Start by holding the bike and getting your child to hop on and off the bike seat. Encourage them to use it just like sitting on a chair. Once they have established that they can put all of their weight onto the bike seat just like a normal seat, you can then you can teach them how to balance. Hold the bike by the seat and make sure your child knows that you won't let the bike fall over. Once they are comfortable and trust that you have the bike stable, it's time to encourage them to learn how to ride the bike. Take it one step at a time Start by encouraging them to take it one step at a time. Once they have built up the courage to ride the bike slowly, they will then gradually build trust and momentum with each step, and in no time they will be gliding along. Take it on every walk Don't go on a walk without taking your child's balance bike. This tip might be annoying at first as you might have to carry the bike for a while but persistence will eventually pay off. If your child doesn't want to ride their balance bike, try to encourage them to ride it part of the way. The more persistence that you have the quicker they will learn how to ride their balance bike. In the end every child will pick up riding a balance bike at different stages. The important thing is to keep trying until they do.

Isabella Walker-Smith x Mocka Nursery
Several months ago, while travelling in New York, Isabella Walker-Smith sat in her hotel bedroom on her laptop, planning a new nursery. Isabella's nursery goal was to find the essential furniture and items - and everything she really wanted for her new baby's room - in one spot. "The streamlined, functional nursery staples of my dreams," she says. Isabella, 31, is the founder of a business, specialising in beautiful interiors pieces, and hers is the kind of home that inspires millennials setting up homes with a thoughtfully curated mix of pieces, particularly if you're one of those parents who vowed not to let the house fill up with plastic junk, and mass-market blitz. This day represents the opportunity to celebrate the powerful female role models who have shaped my world, women I know and cherish, women who have guided me professionally, women who have encouraged and supported me, women who have inspired me and those I have only read about in history books, but all of which have influenced my self worth, career achievements and personal growth. Working alongside female founders and board directors, with women running distribution, women building furniture and driving forklifts, women in customer service, women developing product and managing teams of staff, women creating aesthetics and women working across brand and marketing. As one of four girls of an immigrant Greek family, my mum always brought us up to believe that we could be whatever we wanted to and to her the way to achieve that was through education. From a patriarchal culture that did stereotype women's roles both within the family and work, she chose to challenge the status quo and we all went to University and gained degrees. Like many immigrant families in the 1960's she had to work and work hard, overcoming both language and cultural indifferences to succeed and eventually set up her own business in clothing manufacturing. So this is the only example I ever knew and I'm so grateful for this. Her motto/ my motto is to always choose to challenge. After a rich work history in fashion, furniture and homewares it has been a goal of mine to be part of a buying team and thanks to my determination and the foresight of two amazing women (Emma Smith and Peta Lacy) who could see that my skill sets would be suited to the position, I'm now working in that role. International Women's Day is a day for all women to collectively share and celebrate their successes, achievements, stories, and accomplishments. This day is important to me because it provides a platform to inspire the next generation of females whilst challenging myself and other women to voice our opinions, share our stories and become more visible in our communities, homes, and workplaces. By working together, we can make an impactful change for females everywhere. Who are some of the women who have inspired you in your life? I find inspiration in women that are progressive thinkers and use their voice to enact change and to challenge gender stereotypes. Creative women such as furniture designer Ray Eames, architect Zaha Hadid and interior designer Kelly Wearstler are all women I look up to creatively and professionally. IWD is the perfect day to acknowledge and appreciate the generations before us who stood up for equality. A day to celebrate the women who smashed glass ceilings so that we could walk through. It is a day to celebrate how far we have come, while also continuing conversations about the challenges faced today and how we can make the path moving forward a little clearer and a little easier for the next generation. Who are some of the women who have inspired you in your life? At the core of IWD for me is the next generation. It is for my daughter. Every time I speak up for what's right it is for her, so that hopefully she can work and live in a world where her gender will not be a barrier to her success. She inspires me to do better, to ask more questions and challenge the status quo, especially if it doesn't make room for everyone at the table. How does International Women's Day impact you in your role at Mocka? My career is important to me, just as being a mother is and I am incredibly grateful to work with a business that embraces the messiness that can be a working mothers world. I have always felt support and acceptance from everyone at Mocka. If I say I love work, I feel a twinge of guilt that by saying that it could be taken that I don't love being with my children as much, and it's not that way at all. I love being a working Mum. When I am at work I am driven and focused and I feel proud to show my children that Mum can do it all. I truly do have the best of both worlds. _____ Katherine What does International Women's Day mean to you? International Women's day to me is about celebrating women in all aspects of what they do. Whether it's a stay at home mum or a CEO. I feel all women should be celebrated and appreciated. A day that allows women to thrive. Who are some of the women who have inspired you in your life? I've been lucky enough to be surrounded by inspiring women in my life, in my family and close friends. My late Mum was an inspiration of strength, love and determination. Raising four children these days is no easy task and to still push to get herself back out in the workforce so many years later. Another woman that inspires me and many others is Jacinda Ardern. She's such a strong and intelligent woman who is not afraid to challenge. As a young women and mother who has worked her way up to such an important role for New Zealand and respected worldwide. I feel she is paving the way and inspiring so many young people today. Distribution Centre Manager Gina What does International Women's Day mean to you? To appreciate the courage, tenacity and endurance influential women must have had and contributing members of society in an age where women were considered as a possession. Most importantly this day is to celebrate women today that are hard working and living their lives so many missed out on throughout history. Who are some of the women who have inspired you in your life? I've found inspiration from many women, however it is because of the women in my life, like my mother who has been through adversity and has come out a strong, capable woman, showing me how to provide and support love ones and guiding me to be the best parent I can be. What advice would you give to your 13-year old self? Work hard for the things you want and need, that way you're not relying on anyone and are fully independent. _____ Ashlin What does International Women's Day mean to you? International Women's Day is a day to celebrate the contribution women make to the world, to raise awareness for gender equality, to celebrate how far we have come and acknowledge how far we have to go. A day to celebrate women and to inspire and encourage the younger generation, reminding them they can achieve anything they put their mind to. Who are some of the women who have inspired you in your life? I was very blessed growing up to be surrounded by strong women that set amazing examples and standards for me. My mum and mother figures both had adversity in life but faced every challenge with dignity, strength and grace. They, along with some amazing teachers, taught me inner strength, self belief, and the ability to trust myself and follow my passion. They taught me that I will fall, but the most important lesson is to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try again. What advice would you give to your 13-year old self? Don't let anyone else's negative opinion of you shape your opinion of yourself. You can do more than you think you can. Life will throw many curve balls at you, but how you choose to handle them and face them says more about you than the issue itself. If you want something - go get it. How does International Women's Day impact you in your role at Mocka? I love that Mocka is a diverse and inclusive company offering many opportunities for women. I am lucky to have the support of the company in my role to allow me to lift women up, provide them with training and working opportunities without gender bias, inside an industry traditionally dominated by men.

Mocka Art Series: Supporting Talented Female Artists - Steffi Foo
Steffi Foo We are so excited to partner with the creative Steffi Foo in our three-part local female art series, a celebration in honour of International Women's Day. Learn more about Steffi’s process and the inspiration behind her Art. Her intention is to evoke emotions of unity and connection, bringing a sense of community and belonging through her art. Q: Steffi, tell us about the story behind your art? A: Of course! For me, creating art has always been a way to ground myself in the present moment and find creativity in the everyday. But it wasn't until 2020, during the uncertainty of the Sydney lockdowns, that my artwork became a way to connect with others while sustaining myself financially. I connected with over two hundred individuals, hearing their stories before creating custom artwork for their homes or as gifts, especially for those they couldn't see. It's been a deeply meaningful and personal journey for me. Q: What kind of emotions or feelings do you hope to convey through your artwork? A: My intention with my art is to foster a sense of unity, connection and community. I want my pieces to inspire a feeling of belonging, hopefully reminding people that they are not alone in their experiences and that beauty can be found in shared storytelling. Q: What inspires you to create art? A: One of the biggest inspirations for me is people who use their creative talents to connect with others. I see my art as a platform to spotlight the underheard voices of our world while also educating and raising awareness on important issues through beautiful pieces. Ultimately, my goal is to unite us as humans through the language of art. Q: What space do you envision your artwork fitting into people's homes? A: As each piece I create is custom-made, they are versatile enough to be placed in any room in the house. Having said that, my living room or bedroom pieces seem to be the most frequently requested spaces. The themes of connection and community often work well in shared spaces and those where we can experience the comfort and safety of our homes. Q: How do you choose your color palette? A: Naming my color palettes after the cities I've lived in or visited, I draw inspiration from the colours and textures I observe in each place. Clients can select from my existing palettes, or create their own custom one. One of my favorite custom palettes was requested for a piece called "Vancouver", named after the city where a client had his first date with his fiancé. For instance, the transition into motherhood has significantly influenced a few of my more recent collections, evident in the subdued colours and gentle shapes that echo the serenity of that phase. What emotions or feelings do you intend to evoke through your artwork? In my studio, I find solace and purpose. My aim is to translate the positivity, contentment and empowerment that I feel with each brushstroke. Through vibrant colours and thoughtful compositions, I hope to elicit a sense of joy and tranquility in those who engage with my art. I endeavour for my art to create a serene and uplifting atmosphere in any space. What Inspires You? My inspiration stems from a variety of sources - from my travels around the world to the natural beauty of my coastal home on the Sunshine Coast. Additionally, the experience of motherhood has added depth and introspection to my artistic expression. Every encounter and observation becomes a potential muse as I strive to capture the essence of these experiences on paper or canvas, transforming them into visual narratives. Where is the ideal space for this piece in people's homes? My art is designed to be versatile, fitting seamlessly into various living spaces. Whether it's a focal point in a living room or a subtle accent in a bedroom, each piece is crafted to enhance the ambiance of its surroundings. With a range of sizes available, there's something suitable for every corner of the home, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. How do you select your colour palette? My colour choices are guided by intuition and mood. Bright and vibrant hues may be chosen to reflect a sense of energy and vitality, while softer neutrals evoke a feeling of calm and reflection. Vanessa Brennan, CEO of Mocka, shares her vision for women in business and the value they add to the workplace. -So much has changed for women in the workplace in the past decade and I am incredibly proud to be a part of that change. What comes to mind when you think of home? Is it a childhood household? Maybe it's your favourite travel destination? It could even be your favourite scent? All of these aspects may contribute to transforming a house into a home; one you have always dreamed of.Our environment heavily impacts our emotional and mental state of mind whether we realise it or not. Cluttered areas, lack of personal space and unfinished home projects can leave us feeling anxious and stressed as we are surrounded by small clusters of chaos, which prevents us from truly relaxing and enjoying being in our homes.There are many contributing factors when it comes to turning an empty space into an environment that makes you feel completely at ease, it is also important to note that it is not a case of "one size fits all" when it comes to designing your space.Some will prefer bright colours and flamboyant decor to provoke a sense of sophisticated fun. On the opposite side of the spectrum, others will prefer a home that reflects elements of minimalism combined with dim lighting and a moodier colour palette. To create a home that reflects your wants and needs, you may need to dive a little deeper into what it is specifically that brings you that "sense of home." Taking the time to discover what you require before starting your home transformation will ensure that the end product will provide you with a space that perfectly compliments your lifestyle and personality.There's no place like homeWhat makes us happy in the spaces we inhabit? - Knowing that our space compliments our personality, style, and daily routine. Much like our clothing, we reflect the essence of who we are through our design choices. The idea of home will differ between each individual as we all have slightly different variations and visions of what the true value of "home" is. The first time you visit somebody's home you instantly get a sense who they are through their choice of design and décor. Places that provide a sense of warmth and are welcoming are usually the spaces that reflect the unique tastes of their inhabitants.If you find a sense of calm and comfort from the seaside, you may discover that a coastal colour palette of warm neutrals combined with soft hues of blue paired with rattan and jute textiles create an atmosphere of a seaside sanctuary bringing the ocean to you.Similarly, if you prefer a city living lifestyle you may find that your sense of home is brought to you through a darker palette with deep browns, black and moody wooden textures that capture the essence of a big city.The beauty of design allows us to play with styles to make it our own, so don't feel limited to staying loyal to one particular style because there could be a myriad that you gravitate towards! Remember to take advantage of any sentimental or nostalgic mementos such as, family photos, travel souvenirs or meaningful artwork; this will inject character into your space whilst also acting as a timeless piece of décor. Décor with sentiment can also be an amazing conversation starter with your guests.Creating the visionThe key to creating your dream environment is knowing what you want your final product to look like; this means getting to know your style, the flow of your lifestyle and what you don't find appealing. Having that knowledge will allow you to create a space that is stylish and unique yet, practical for your everyday life.A simple way to begin your project is to build a vision board from inspiration you find online, in magazines or in real life. Through these sources you will be able to define your style and pinpoint certain qualities of a space you enjoy being surrounded by whether it's the lighting, colour palette, or furniture. The outcome will be a list of design characteristics and ideas that you can incorporate into your new home. Curating your ideal environment will take some time and patience but the transformation process should be exciting and enjoyable so don't rush to get to your final reveal. During your research phase there should be a few statement pieces that catch your eye, take note of these as it is important to invest in key pieces for a room. Every space has one or two furniture items that are worth investing in such as: the dining room - dining table and chairs, the living room - the sofa, the bedroom - the bed frame and mattress etc. All of these pieces will be heavily used therefore it's important that you aren't constantly having to replace them; with quality comes longevity. Statement pieces also require a sense of timelessness as they need to withstand the test of time in every aspect. By keeping those key pieces somewhat neutral you will have the freedom to evolve your home as your life stage changes change rather than revolve around fluctuating trends. Introduce touches of trends through easily interchangeable décor (pillows, rugs, artwork etc) or paint colour. The art of home is what makes a space completely your own. It should be an extension of who you are; your favourite colours, materials,and everyday necessities that you find happiness within. Ease into this transformation by starting with decluttering and organisation. This will allow the more fundamental part of the makeover to flow seamlessly as you won't be surrounded by unwanted items.
